How can I improve my odds in Vape Russian Roulette?
OR
What can I do to reduce the Risk of a Vape or e-Cigarette exploding in my Face, or my Pocket?

Hmmmmm?
At this point I pause for thought……. and have a flashback ….!
The question reminds me of a book title that caught my eye on my Brother-in-Law’s bookshelf, MANY years ago, when I was about 22, I think.
The title was “What can I do for my Sex Life after the age of 50?”.
Needless to say I was intrigued, although of course I hoped it would be a while before I would need an answer! To have a sneak peak, I opened the book and expectantly turned a page
– it was blank!
….and so was the next one
– and the next!
Indeed there was not a single word or mark printed on ANY of the pages inside the beautifully bound, hard-cover book!
The answer to the question that I posed at the top of this Post, about Reducing the Risks of exploding Vapes, seems at first glance to have a lot in common with my Brother-in-Law’s book!
BLANK
So is that the last word on the subject?
Thinking about it some more – there might be some things you can do, that can perhaps reduce the risk of it exploding, but if it IS going to explode, putting it IN your face to vape, makes it ‘a bit difficult’ to make it less hazardous!
Let’s start with the Vapes or e-Cigarettes themselves.
There are Three ‘Simple, Basic Principles’ which run throughout this whole blog
which should give you at least a bit more safety –
1. Buy “Quality” (more expensive) equipment which should have a better likelihood of being better designed, and better made, with fewer manufacturing defects. This means it will be a lot less likely to malfunction – which means less likely to short circuit, burn or explode – which means safer for you.
We looked at this in detail in the last Post Blog, #6, when we illustrated a whole range of defects – actually 15 specifically noted, which were found when SIX imported low cost Batteries were taken to pieces and examined in detail.
What I hope you saw is what is meant by –
“Badly designed…. badly made… potentially dangerous batteries”.
There were enough defects to keep you awake at night! Only TWO out of SIX Batteries were relatively defect-free. Yes, Just TWO……. *NOTE the words – ‘Relatively defect-free’.
– This is what meant by ‘Poor Quality‘
Actually it really should be labelled ‘Criminally Dangerous‘
But back to the Safety ‘Principles’….
2. DO NOT modify the device. You might think that making the battery last longer, or making more clouds may be cool, but think again –
Home-made modifications feature in MOST of the Vape or e-Cigarette explosions.
Sub-ohm Vaping
In particular so-called ‘Sub-ohm Vaping’ features in injuries. (Sub-ohm Vaping – where the heating coil has a resistance of less than 1.0 Ω …..ohm is the measure of Electrical Resistance of a conductor). If you put in a custom sub-ohm coil, more electricity flows in the coil – making the coil hotter – so you get more vapour and flavour, apparently. And if you have low-capacity batteries, this permits the batteries to give up more power quicker than they were designed for.
Here’s a quote from a Vaping Blog on the Web….
Overall, understanding sub-ohm vaping is essential for vapers who want to experience bigger vapor clouds and more intense flavors. By using the right device and e-liquid, vapers can enjoy the benefits of sub-ohm vaping while staying safe. “It’s important to use batteries with a high amp limit and to never exceed the recommended wattage range for the battery.
BUT – this is very likely to cause the separators (remember the separators?) to breakdown and the electrolytes to mix and the gases to be produced and the battery to burst or explode.
Do you get it yet? More flavour, more vape, and more bang for your buck! – blowing your teeth out of your face….. now there’s a deal!
3. USE THE RIGHT CHARGER – the charger that came with your device. If you have to replace the charger get the same charger as the original. Not all chargers are identical.
If you buy a charger that is sold as a ‘Fast Charger’ consider that it might deliver too much power, or a current or voltage that is higher than your Vape is designed for. Charging with a charger that is too powerful may not blow up your Vape at the time, but it may cause internal damage to the separators or the Electrolyte, so that it causes it to fail sometime in the future – perhaps when it is in your face?
4. DON’T CHARGE YOUR VAPE WITH A CELLPHONE OR TABLET CHARGER
The internet seems to have many videos with titles like “Extend the life of your Li-ion Battery”, “Build your own Li-ion Battery”, or “How to repair a broken Battery etc….”.
Our advice is DON’T – even if you think you know what you are doing. New teeth, or a skin graft will cost more than the money you saved on the battery! If it was not a Vape, but a scooter, then burning the house down will be a catastrophe, for the sake of saving a few dollars.
We will be looking at e-Scooters and e-Bikes very soon, in the next upcoming Blog post ….
What Else Can I Do to Reduce the Risk of being Hurt by my VAPE?
1. DON’T ACCIDENTALLY SHORT CIRCUIT YOUR BATTERIES.
1.1 If you are a little careless when changing the battery in your vape, you might accidentally touch two batteries together making a short circuit. This might cause an almost immediate explosion while in your hands… the case studies show that this has happened.
1.2 If you toss your spare battery into your pocket, think about the real possibility of a short circuit. If there are two batteries in the pocket…. if you have some small change, or some keys in the same pocket, you change the words from ‘possibility’ to ‘probability’. The odds may be low, but you are changing the odds, and not in your favour.

“It was hot, very, very hot,” he said. “I just put my hand in my pocket and pulled out the battery. It felt like my leg was still on fire.”
His large burn – which was 7ins (18cm) in width and 12ins (30cm) in length across his upper leg – meant he could not work for a month and needed regular hospital treatment.
“The burn was so deep it damaged the muscle on my leg, I couldn’t walk, couldn’t do anything,” he added.
“You’ve got to be careful, you’ve got to be mega, mega careful.”

MUCH Better still – Don’t carry your Vape in your pocket.
